Firstly i just want to say how sorry i am to hear about the loss of Victor, i have a budgie(sparky) and i know how important these playful ball of feathers become to you! The story of Victor was really touching and it moved me alot.I thought it was adorable when you talked about Victor's first love Fuzzy his little toy.Sparky my female budgie is also like this, she absolutly adores her little bell in her cage with which see will happily sleep on her head, awwww! Reading Victor's story i was astounded by Victor's free mind way of speaking in which i mean able to make up own sentences, use them at the right time and know axactly what he is saying, way more advanced than Alex the African Grey! Victor was and still is the most intelligent and remarkable bird around!!! Not forgeting Betty either who is also a charming little bird too!!! Thanx for such a brilliant, moving and informative site it's a must see for all budgie owners, i'll be coming back again and again, highly recomendable!!! All our best Louise(17) and sparky(4) P.S Budgies are the BEST!!!!!!

Victor is the most adoreable pet I have ever seen. I can understand him, but not your other birds. Perhaps many of us have talking budgies and dont know they they are talking. I do believe birds are very intellegent. I own 2 budgies, and I am trying to tame them. I would love to find a talking bird to teach them.

I listen to Victor and Betty almost every day with my budgie named PeeWee. He is very young, only about 5 months old. I am trying very hard to get him to learn to talk. Listening to Victor and Betty is part of our programme. My budgie is now a computer geek and thinks he has exclusive rights to the computer because he thinks other budgies live there. Thank you very much for your wonderful website. Susan and PeeWee

Ryan, I was so moved when I read about Victor. He was so intellegent.. much more than many people are. I understood what he was saying and I hope others are able to get his message. I believe animals are our equals. They have the same feelings and thoughts we have, however many times they go unnoticed. You were blessed to have such an intelligent and beautiful bird, and Victor was lucky to have a family that loved him so much and cared about what he had to say. Thank you so much for allowing others to experience your incredible story.

I am a veterinarian that has a special interest in avain medicine and surgery. I grew up with budgies and experienced first hand the intelligence and personality these little birds are capable of. As a child, I allowed these birds to grow into the possibilties of who they were, as I had no predetermined boundaries. This concept most certainly applies to all species. I recently had to say goodbye to my 20+ year old Red Lory parrot who also became quite a distinct personality in our home. I now have a young rescued Rainbow lorikeet. Budgies are still my first love and I have to say my favorite patients. I am forever hearing my avian clients relate experiences with their parrots, budgies and even canaries that leave no doubt the incredible abilities the avian species develop if given the important tools needed to survive--both physically and mentally/emotionally. My passion in this profession is preaching preventative medicine. The obvious is what is needed to prevent physical illness. What isn't so obvious to people is how important it is to nurture their emotional and mental development. Thank you for sharing your experiences with your feathered companions. I feel the public is so grossly uneducated when it comes to managing their pets. Looking forward to hearing more from Victor! Janet

Hey Ryan- This is Jodi. You know, I'm in the budgieresearch2 group. I've been reading and listening to the stuff on this website and it's really quite amazing. In fact it's so amazing that it's hard to believe. I think we humans underestimate animals. I believe that animals really do have feelings and emotions. Perhaps not quite as complex as humans, but then again, that could just be me underestimating animals again. I haven't gotten all the way throughj it, but I plan to. I'm crying - it hurts too much to read about the end. I love budgies more than anything. I've had them since 1964. I never had one that could talk. I had my first one, Ruffles, mounted because I couldn't give her up. I still have her even though she died in 1967. I have 13 birds now - 2 African greys, 2 doves, 1 bee bee parrot, 2 grey-cheek parakeets, a yellow-nape, a yellow-crown and a red- lored amazon. I also have 3 budgies, 2 I bred myself. I will be 50 in March. I have loved budgies since I was 12. I never get over losing any of my birds. I had a dove for 25 years until 1999. I had his wife for 14 years. I had my beloved first bee bee parrot, whom I considered my son, for 17 years. I had him mounted also and I plan to be buried with him when the time comes. My greys and my nape and my red lored talk. One of my greys says "I love you mama" and "Good night my chickens, mama loves you." They all say goodbye when I wave at them. They sing the Can-Can song and a couple speak Spanish that they learned from a bird I baby-sat a long time ago. I baby sit an Umbrella cockatoo so my parrots are learning to yell like him. No matter how many birds I get, or what kind, it is parakeets that are my absolute favorite. I collect keet figurines, jewelry, etc. I can quote you from memory the poem I wrote when I was 15 and had lost my first parakeet, Ruffles - my little blue girl who I still have mounted and will keep forever. My heart was breaking when I wrote it. To RUFFLES A puff of blue A cloud of white Each feather tucked in place A dear expression which never left Her sweet and charming face. I loved that little puff of blue Each tiny line and dot She was my true and faithful friend And joyful hours wrought Three years my bird was on this earth Three years was all she knew But those were good and happy years For my little puff of blue My bird was taken from me Peacefully she slept But the memory of her loving faith Will in my heart be kept. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm still crying. Sharon Sweet

I am so amazed! I didn't realize that a budgie could talk so clearly and intelligently. Sadly, I just lost my little baby budgie, Peek-a-boo. She never had a chance to learn to talk. I now have a Quaker Parrot but Victor has inspired me to try again with a beautiful budgie. PuttPutt, my qp, could probably take some lessons in speech from one of these tiny wonders! Thanks for the wonderful site Ryan. I thoroughly enjoyed it -- in fact, I am neglecting my chores just to sit here and cruise your site. Give Victor a kiss for us all...

You have such a smart bird! I have a budgie too named sweetie. He would say things like "hello sweetie.." "hi birdie", "hi babie bird", "hello sweetie birdie", "sweetie birdie birdie birdie bird SWEEEET..". Lately, he even says "come here tweety bird". I don't know where he hot that one from. We let him fly around the house, and he loves to stand by the mirrors to talk to the "other bird". But lately we are busy with finals and he's usually home alone... He doesn't really wants to play with us like he did before (he was so friendly), and he gets really mad and flys away whenever he doesn't get what he wants. I don't know what to do, should I spend more time with him or should I get another bird for him?

Victor is incredible!!! We too have had several really good talking budgies. The last one, Bingo, would say, "B-I-N-G-O, Bingo is my name" and he named his little girlie toy, Ditty Mae. Have no idea where he came up with that. He would say, "Come here, Ditty Mae", "Get over here, Ditty Mae" and other cute things. His vocabulary was well over 100 words. After suffering thru the loss of losing such a precious little birdie, we got an African Grey parrot...as you can see and hear on my web site. Hopefully, he will outlive us and we won't go thru the sorrow again of losing a buddy. Parakeets are so amazing, it's sometimes scary. They are little humans with feathers!!

Cecil also talks a bit, even though we later got him a friend, Helen (who we thought was a Henry...) He says, "Whatcha doin'?" "Cecil's a pretty bird!" and variations... "Cecils a BURD" "Cecil's a pretty pretty" This goes on at length "bird bird, pretty! Pretty bird bird bird bird pretty!" He is blue with electric purple cheek spots, and he and Helen are out on their play stand pretty much whenever we are home. They, too, can fly just a bit, and enjoy terrorizing the Shelties by chasing them around the house. (The Shelties go hide in the back room when the birds are in one of those moods. Shelties are herding dogs; they have no interest in crunching budgies.) Wendy

Steven Fox Tuesday, 6/12/01, 6:04 PM I think your birds are absolutly amazing. They are very gifted. I am so sorry for the death of your bird. You are truely an honor to talk to. I have a question. I am training my budgies but they just dont seem to want to stay on my finger no matter what I do. How do I calm them down, so I can train them in a proper manner? Thank you very much for your time on a 14 year old boy like me. Again you are very lucky to have such gifted birds. From: West Islip, New York Web Site: Steves World E-mail: Foxo308@aol.com

Ryan Reynolds Sunday, 5/20/01, 2:22 PM Thanks for your comments with regards to budgies not having vocal cords. I am more familar with teaching them to talk not how they produce speech.

tralalaitsme Wednesday, 5/16/01, 11:07 AM It says on the front page that Betty's "vocal cords" are still developing... Budgies don't *have* vocal cords... They "speak" by adjusting the way that air moves through their throat... Although I do believe that what you say on this site is true, I must say that writing something like that significantly decreases your credibility. Amy Monday, 12/18/00, 10:25 PM I was just surfing last night (I never do that) and I came upon your site. At first it was just a fun thing to listen to your recordings, but then it finally donged on me that Victor is actually talking. I work at a pet store and we have an Amazon that's been with us for a while so Im excited to see what Grumpy will do if I talk to him. I dont feed him though so maybe I'll get the girl that works in the morning to be the main person. I wish you luck in gaining recognition for your work and hope to keep getting updates on Victor and Betty. From: Arizona E-mail: janel@theglobe.com

I've bookmarked it so I can keep reading when I have the time. Talk to you later! Jodi

I love to visit Victors site. I have a small budgie whom I love very much and a larger parrot whom I love. I have always believed they understood more than they let on just by their actions. I talk to them like they are children and I expect them to understand. I know Victor was a delight to you and Betty also. Birds are great! Peggy
